PMIS - Person Missing - At approximately 1700 hrs local Liverpool Coastguard received a call from Cumbria Police for aid in searching for a male who lived in the Canal Foot area of Ulverston.He had been missing from earlier in the day but no precise time could ne established. Walney Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to a liaison point at Canal Foot where further details were given with regard to the history and description of the man. 1283174092_Canal Foot.jpg
After liaison with the police it was decided to call in a coastguard flanking team from Millom to help in the search area from Bardsea in the south to Greenodd to the North. The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team were also requested to search inland areas including the Ulverston Canal. Rescue 131 was in the lakes and was tasked to help in the search. As the search continued the initial clothing description given was discounted as the clothes the male was thought to be wearing were found in the man's house.
The helicopter searched the area from Greenodd South to Bardsea including the sands where the tide had ebbed off and Chapel Island just off Priory Point, it also did a sweep of the eastern area of coast on the Holker / Sandgate side . After a detailed search in conjunction with police support, the search was called off on the coastal area, MRT volunteers continued to search the inland areas.

PWI - Personal Watercraft Inflatable - Following a 999 call from a member of the public reporting 2 1232757752_Silecroft.jpgchildren in danger of being swept out to sea on an Inflatable bed, Millom CRT proceeded to Silecroft beach.
Upon arrival on scene the CRT were met by a Police unit which reported that the children were both ashore unaided and were safe and well. After checking the scene Millom CRT returned to station.

AOA - Assisting Other Authorities - At 08:30 hrs local time on Monday 23rd August 2010 Liverpool Coastguard received a call from Cumbria Police for assistance on the beach near to Aldingham. They reported that a man sheltering from the inclement weather was stuck about 25 feet up a small cliff and in bushes.1282945200_Aldingham.jpg

Walney Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the scene which was close to Moats Farm near Aldingham, on arrival they found the man was suffering  from hypothermia and minor injuries, the North West Ambulance was called to give medical assistance. The man was removed down the cliff area by ropes and stretcher, treated by ambulance personnel and then  was placed in the Pride of Cumbria Air Ambulance (GNAA) which arrived on the scene after been requested by Paramedics and Coastguards due to the rough terrain and incoming tide.
The casualty was taken to Furness General Hospital in Barrow in Furness for treatment

AR - Animal Rescue - Walney CRT were tasked to Cavendish Dock in the Barrow Dock System after 1282944781_Cavendish Dock.jpgthe MRCC had received a distraught 999 call from a man whose dog had jumped into the dock. Fearing the man may try to rescue the dog and put himself in danger the CRT attended with MCA Peregrine stood by.
After establishing where the man was and that he would not go after the dog CRT members managed to retrieve the animal by lassoing it with line and bringing it to the shore non the worse for the experience. Unfortunately a number of onlookers did seem to have an attitude toward CRT members but this was dealt with in the usual firm but well mannered coastguard manner.

Location: Jubilee Bridge, Walney Channel

PS - Person Suicide - At approximately 2330 hrs local Liverpool Coastguard asked for assistance for an incident at the Jubilee Bridge which joins Walney Island to the Barrow mainland.
A female was on the bridge threatening to jump off the bridge into the water below.
Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were tasked to a site away from the bridge so as not to be seen by the female.
However all were stood down before arriving on the scene as the police had managed to talk the lady down from the bridge.

16 August 07:20 to 08:30 BST

Location: Jubilee Bridge, Walney Channel
SAR Units: Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine, Cumbria Police Barrow ILB, NW Ambulance, Cumbria Fire Job: 48
PS - Person Suicide - Liverpool MRCC received a call for assistance at 0720 hrs local from Cumbria Police, the had a male who was on the roof of the North Side Motor House on the Jubilee Bridge1232757749_Jubilee_Bridge.jpg which joins Walney Island to the main land. The male was threatening to throw himself off the bridge on to the rocks below when the tide ebbed to low water.
MCA Peregrine was tasked to the north side of the bridge and Barrow ILB was to the south, both vessels discreetly hidden from the mans view.
After an hour police negotiators managed to talk the man down from the roof onto the bridge he was taken away in a police vehicle. The man was known to local coastguards.

15 August 23:00 to 23:30 BST

Location: Aldingham, Coast Road
SAR Units: Walney CRT, Cumbria Police

PMIS - Person missing - At approximately 2300 hrs local Liverpool Coastguard received a call for assistance off Cumbria Police with regard to a missing female in the Aldingham area on the coastal route between Barrow and Ulverston.
It was understood that the female had a history of various problems but had never gone missing before.
The casualty had last been seen at about 1300hrs that day, as Walney CRT assembled at the station the team was stood down as the lady had turned up. No further coastguard action.


15 August 15:00 to 15:30 BST

Whilst on local patrol in the Furness area due to high activity because of the hot weather a member of the public approached the crew of Walney MRU on Walney Is expressing her concern at the large number of children jumping off the Bull Nose into Walney Channel. The tide was ebbing and the water getting shallower.1282944841_Bull Nose.jpg
Walney Mobile tried to contact MCA Peregrine to task it to the area but the vessel was in an area of poor comms, Liverpool Coastguard managed to call Peregrine and task to the scene. On arrival the crew found 8 children jumping off the wall into the channel, advice was given and a stern warning passed to those involved, after some abuse to the crew, the children realised it was in their best interests to leave the area which they did relatively quickly and without further abuse. Walney Mobile arrived to see the children leaving the scene and muttering amongst themselves.

PINJ - Person injured - Just as Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were standing down on station from the job at Foulney, they were tasked to the marsh area between Kents Bank and Humphrey Head (Kirkhead) along with Arnside CRT and Bay Rescue.
A lady who was taking part in a cross bay walk had lost her footing and gone into a gulley on the1281307504_08-08-10.jpg marsh approximately three quarters of a mile from the shore.Walney S/O was quickly on the scene to co-ordinate the incident keeping Liverpool CG informed with regular sit reps.
Bay Haglund was quickly on the scene and assessed the casualty as having a broken ankle. The female was extricated from the scene by the haglund and was transported across the marsh and sand to the car park at Humphrey Head where crews from Walney CRT Bay Rescue and Arnside CRT were waiting along with ambulance staff from the North West Ambulance Service. The lady was treated by paramedics on the scene and transported to Furness General Hospital.

PC - Person cut off - At 1915 hrs local Liverpool MRSC received a call with regard to a man cut off by the tide on the end of Foulney Island.
Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine and Barrow ILB were tasked to the scene. Fortunately as Coastguards were being transported to Foulney by MCA Peregrine and the Barrow ILB was proceeding the man was seen to get out of the danger area and was safe.
All units were stood down

03 August 20:40 to 21:30 BST

PS - Person Suicide - Liverpool Coastguard received a call from Cumbria Police requesting assistance to help search for a potential suicidal female in her mid 30's.
The female had called relatives and stated she was up to her knees in water some where on the beach on the coastal road which runs between Barrow and Ulverston. An R/V point was agreed for Walney CRT to meet Police at White Hall on the coastal road. Walney CRT were tasked to the area and MCA Peregrine readied for safety.
Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were stood down when the CRT arrived on scene, the female had been found nowhere  near where police information indicated.

01 August 16:05 to 16:15 BST

PMIS - Person Missing - Millom CRT paged by Liverpool MRCC following a request for Coastguard assistance from Cumbria Police. A member of the public had reported to the Police finding a pile of clothes and a dog beside a car adjacent to the Beach Cafe at Haverigg, the clothes had been there for quite a while.

Upon arrival at the scene Millom CRT noticed a man emerging from the water having had a swim. Once it was confirmed that the articles of clothing and dog were his CG units stood down.

01August 15:00 to 15:30 BST

Sandgate, Morecambe Bay

At approximately 1500 hrs local Walney S/O received information from a local resident that he had found a canoe at Sandgate which looked recently occupied and he was worried that it may be a missing person or children may put the canoe in the water and harm themselves.
 
Walney S/O checked with Liverpool for any missing persons and said he would go to the area to check out the craft. The canoe was at GR 354756 and was in good condition with a paddle inside. A check was made with the farmer at Sandgate Farm and he indicated that a number of children from the Flookbourgh area had been seen playing in the craft but had abandoned it a couple of days previously. The craft was taken from the beach/river area and placed a safe distance from the beach to prevent small children accessing it.
 
The farmer was informed where the canoe had been placed in case the owner came to retrieve the canoe
