29 July 10:00 to 11:00 BST Location: North End of Walney Island SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 40 VAG - Vessel Aground - At approximately 1000 hrs local Liverpool MRCC received a call of concern with regards to a dinghy abandoned at the North End of Walney Island on the west side of the island.Walney CRT were tasked to investigate. With the incoming tide a quick run with the mobile unit was made to the scene and the dinghy was secured to the rear of the vehicle and towed back to Ernse Bay. The vessel was removed from the scene to prevent children accessing the dinghy and possibly drifting out to sea. The vessel was placed next to the NW Kite Surfing School away from the beach but could be recoverd by the owner easily. 26 July 14:00 to 15:30 BST Location: Earnsie Bay, Walney Island SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 39 VAG - Vessel aground - Liverpool MRCC received a 999 call from a member of the public with concerns regards to an empty dinghy which was in good condition, they had found the vessel on the tide line at Ernsie Bay Walney. Walney CRT were tasked to investigate the call and check for possible recent occupation of the dinghy. On arrival, a petrol can was found in the dingy as was an oar but no signs of recent use, the vessel was in good condition. The fuel was removed from the dinghy for safety reasons and the position duly noted in case of further concerns. no further action required. 25 July 22:30 to 23:30 BST Location: Michaelson Road Bridge SAR Units: Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine, Cumbria Police Job: 38 PS - Person Suicide - At 2230 hours Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public indicating that an individual (male) was on the Michealson Road Bridge which crosses the Devonshire Dock which is part of the Barrow dock system. The male was threatening to jump into the water below. The MRSC contacted Cumbria Police and Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were placed in a discreet position out of site of the area. In a short time however the individual was talked out of jumping by the police and no further coastguard action required. 24 July 13:00 14:15 BST Location: Lake Windermere SAR Units: MCA Peregrine, Windermere Lake Wardens, Cumbria Police Job: 37 VDEF - Vessel defective - Whilst on joint agency working with Cumbria Police, Lakes Wardens and Rangers on Lake Windermere Cumbria Police requested MCA Peregrine to assist a broken down vessel drifting into danger. The vessel a large Bayliner had engine failure and was drifting toward the Windermere car ferry, close to the shore at Far Sawery. A crew member from MCA Peregrine boarded the Bayliner and secured a tow line and the vessel was then towed to Ferry Nab, there were 4 persons on board the vessel. 23 July 07:20 to 08:20 BST Location: Seascale SAR Units: Millom CRT, Whitehaven CRT, Cumria Police Job: 36 PMIS - Person missing - Following a request for assistance from Cumbria Police, Millom and Whitehaven CRTs tasked to Seascale to search for an elderly 76 y/o lady who had gone missing from a care home at 05:15. Members of Millom CRT travelling to work at the Nuclear Plant at Sellafield were soon on scene with the rest of the team travelling from station. The lady was soon located (The pink pyjama's helped) by Police Oficers with assistance from Millom CRT members. The other teams in transit were stood down and returned to station. 18 July 11:00 to 16:30 BST Location: Cleator Moor SAR Units: Walney CRT, Whitehaven CRT, Maryport CRT Job: 35 PMIS - Person missing - A number of Walney CRT members with other Cumbria Sector teams were taking part in a sponsored coastal walk from Bootle to Whitehaven. The teams had reached Drigg when Liverpool Coastguard contacted the Whitehaven team to assist other services for a missing person along the banks of the River Ehen. The Whitehaven CRT along with the other Cumbria Sector CRO's responded to the request and searched the area as requested. The search ceased at 1630 hrs, with the Walney CRO's returning to their vehicles some distance away by means of the Whitehaven team. No individual had been located 16 July 13:45 to 14:30 BST Location: Deep Water Berth, Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 34 VAID - Vessel appearsin difficulty - Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public that he had seen a blue vessel named "Lizzie B" slowly sinking on it's mooring just north of the Deep Water Berth Barrow. He was sure there was no one on board the vessel but thought it prudent to inform the coastguard. Walney CRT were tasked to investigate the craft which was known to CRT members as a blue steel hulled mussel barge.On arrival at the scene the vessel had sunk completely. Liverpool CG requested a short watch on the vessel to check if any oils or fuel from the vessel were likely to cause a pollution problem. There was no indication of any leakage at the time. The owner was informed by other boat owners and intended to buoy the vessel ASAP. 16 July 13:00 to 13:45 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 33 VAD - Vessel adrift - At 1300 hrs local a dog walker reported to Walney CRO's who were on station that he had seen what looked like an upturned boat drifting slowly toward the North End of Walney Island up the channel. He stated that it looked orange in colour but could give any indication of it's size as it was to far away. Walney CRO's reported the fact to Liverpool Coastguard who tasked Walney to investigate. CRO's got to the top of the Barrow Slag Bank and got an excellent view of the object which was in fact a floating platform used by water sports enthusiasts in North Walney Channel. The platform had dragged it's moorings in the very high winds (65 mph) and had slowly drifted to the area known as the meetings. The owner was informed of the incident later in the day 15 July 15:00 to 16:00 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 32 VAD - Vessel adrift - Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public that a white and blue motor cruiser had broken from it's mooring and was drifting north up Walney Channel. As with a similar incident the day before, it needed to be established if any persons were on board the vessel. Walney CRT were tasked to Channel Side where the vessel was drifting, the wind and tide grounded the vessel opposite North Scale on the Barrow side of the channel and it was established no persons were on board. The vessel approx 19 ft with a 75 HP Mariner attached was secured by CRO's as high winds were forecast for the next tide which was due to be a little higher than the previous. 14 July 14:00 to 15:00 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 31 VAD - Vessel adrift - Liverpool MRSC received a 999 call from a member of the public, that a motor cruiser approx 25 in length was drifting north up the Walney Channel. The vessel was north of the Jubilee Bridge. Walney CRT were tasked to the area as the first informant was not sure if any persons were on board the vessel, although he indicated he had seen no one. On arrival at scene Walney CRT noted the vessel was under tow with another vessel and were informed that no persons were on board. The vessel had come loose from a maintenance cradle at Barrow Sailing Club. Observations were kept on the vessels until the vessel under tow (Red Marlin) was secured on it's own mooring. 11 July 13:00 to 14:00 BST Location: Sheep Island, Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 30 APS - Accident prevention, surveillance - A member of the public approached a Walney CRT member with his concerns regards a canoeist on Sheep Island. The CRT member who was close by the scene and reported the concerns to DSO who passed the information on to Liverpool Coastguard. The individual was on Sheep Island had informed a friend, (by cell phone) the first informant, that his small outboard had failed and he was going to attempt to paddle to Walney. Advice was given by the on scene CRO to stay on the island due to the strong currents and high winds. Walney S/O and DSO tasked to the scene while the on scene CRO kept observation at he scene. As the tide ebbed and the currents lessoned the individual was able to get to his destination safely. No further action required, the advice had been given and sensibly acted on 6 July 18:40 to 19:00 Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 29 APS - Accident prevention, surveillance - Shortly after the sunken vessel incident (1840 local) a dog walker came into Walney CRT and informed S/O Walney that a number of youths were tombstoning off the Bull Nose at the Dock museum. Walney S/O and MCA Peregrine went to the area and informed the youths of the dangers of what they were doing, as usual the youths were verbal in their reply which was of no surprise!!!!! 6 July 17:15 to 18:30 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine Job: 28 VAID - Vessel appears in difficulty - Liverpool Coastguard received a call from a member of the public stating that a local large fishing vessel white and orange in colour had sunk on it's mooring in Walney Channel opposite the Dock Museum. Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were tasked to investigate to check that no persons were involved. On investigation the vessel was in fact the old Knott End Ferry which was red and was in about 30 feet of water, only the vhf aerial could be seen above the water. The orange and white was a life belt still attached to the vessel. Investigations took place to find the owner. It was decided that the vessel would be marked as it was in the middle of the channel and owners would try to pump out the vessel at low water after finding the leak. Advice was given that at all stages of the recovery including completion Liverpool MRSC should be informed.
