30 June 15:00 to 15:45 BST Location: Lowsey Point, Dudon Sands SAR Units: Walney CRT, NWSFJob: 27 VAID - Vessel appears in difficulty - At 1500 hrs two Walney CRT members were approaching Scarth Hole through the Scarth Channel, they were working at the time for another agency the NW Sea Fisheries Committee. On the approach they sighted a 16 foot cabin day boat in an area just west of Lowsey Point. The vessel was drifting into shallow water toward the shore, they offered assistance which was grudgingly accepted after explanation of the dangers of the area. Liverpool Coastguard were informed that the tow was active and the crew intended to tow the vessel to the Ferry Pitching Walney through the North End of Walney and down Walney Channel. The owner indicated he had run out of fuel but would fit a small aux engine, the tow was released at the area opposite Sowerby Lodge at the owners request. The vessel was on an erratic course and struggling against the tide and making very slow progress due to the engine being to small and a short shaft when a long shaft was required., Walney CRT were tasked to observe the vessel for safety reasons as NWSF were unsure the vessel would make its destination. The vessel took some time to make a safe mooring North of the Jubilee Bridge where it secured next to another larger vessel. 28 June 10:00 to 20:30 BST Location: Drigg SAR Units: Millom CRT, Cumbria Police, Royal Navy EODJob: 26 OL - Ordnance on Land - Millom CRT tasked following a report from Cumbria Police reporting a suspected item of ordnance on the beach at Drigg, Cumbria. A Royal Navy EOD team were tasked. Whilst waiting for the Navy the CRT located a second device not far from the first. The NAVY EOD team attended the scene and disposed of both items.27 June 02:15 to 03:30 BST Location: Piel Island, Walney Channel SAR Units: Barrow ILB, Cumbria Police, NW Ambulance Service, Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine Job: 25 AOA - Assisting other authorities- At 0215 hrs Liverpool Coastguard received a call that an incident was taking place on Piel Island and that police and ambulance services would be required.Barrow lifeboat which is situated a short distance from the island was launched and waited for police and paramedics to arrive at the lifeboat station, they were then taken to the island. Fire Service personnel had borrowed a small craft to do an initial search of the last known position.Millom and Walney CRT's along with MCA Peregrine were tasked to the lake, to aid the other services, however whilst journeying to the area Liverpool CG stood down the units as police informed them the individual had been found and police were requesting the area police diving team. 13 June 10:00 to 15:00 BST Location: Haverigg SAR Units: Millom CRT, Walney CRT, Cumbria SM, Haverigg IRB, Cumbria PoliceJob: 22 PMIS - Person missing - Millom CRT called to assist Cumbria Police with a search for a missing, possibly despondent male. The amount of ground to be covered was thick with vegitation, which made the search extremely difficult. All possible locations were checked. All the search areas came back negative so the search was stood down pending further information. 06 June 14:30 to 15:30 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine, Job: 21 Liverpool Coastguard received a concerned call from staff at the Barrow Dock Museum with regards to youths throwing concrete blocks into Walney Channel with scaffolding poles sticking 3 feet out of the blocks. Staff were concerned that vessels at the entrance of the old graving dock may be holed if they sat on them when the tide receded or children may impale themselves on the poles as this is an are where tombestoneing activities have taken place and a public foot path is close by. Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were tasked to the area to investigate, as the tide receded it could be seen that the concerns of staff were correct, the poles were in a vertical position with the concrete blocks as a base. Walney CRT removed the objects from the very soft mudded area and placed them below the sea wall away from the vessels and the old dock entrance. 06 June 14:30 to 15:30 BST Location: Piel Island & Roanhead SAR Units: Walney CRT, Barrow ILB, North West Ambulance Job: 19 & 20 Medivac - Medical evacuation- Between 0215 and 0245 Liverpool CG received two calls from the North West Ambulance Service asking for coastguard assistance, firstly a young girl on Piel Island had injured herself in the early hours, although not seriously the ambulance service felt that a response was required quickly for the casualty at hospital. Having spoken to S/O Walney it was decided to remove the casualty with Barrow ILB as in the meantime another job for assistance was required in the sand hills in the Roanhead area. A young man who was having breathing difficulties required assistance from the ambulance service but they were unable to pinpoint the exact location within a mile. Walney CRT were tasked to search the area to help find the casualty, but on arrival at the car park of the Roanhead reserve the team were stood down as the young man was at a beach party and had panicked that he was having an asthma attack. 04 June 18:30 to 19:30 BST Location: Sandy Gap, Walney Island SAR Units: Walney CRT, Barrow ILB, North West Ambulance, Helimed 08 Job: 18 Meivac - Medical evacuation- Walney Island Coastguard was called to assist NW Ambulance Service in evacuating an injured 20 year old from the beach near Sandy Gap. Paramedics had been called when the young man sustained a suspected broken ankle. On arrival on scene, Coastguard Rescue Officers agreed with paramedics that it could aggravate the suspected injury if they were to drive the injured young man across rough stones and a bumpy track back to the ambulance. They therefore requested the NW Air Ambulance, callsign “Helimed 08”, to attend. The helicopter was already on the helipad at Furness General Hospital from a previous incident, so was quickly on scene and removed the casualty from the beach and transferred him straight to hospital. His condition is unknown. |
