VAD - Vessel adrift - Liverpool RCC received a 999 call at 1100 hrs UTC with regard to a day boat drifting in Walney Channel.

The vessel was sighted opposite The Ferry Hotel drifting south under the Jubilee Bridge against the tide. The high winds were pushing the vessel amongst other moored craft south of the bridge.

The informant could not say for certain if the vessel was occupied but was approximatly 18' in length white hull and a white topside cabin and a Mariner outboard motor, a yellow mooring bouy was still attached to the bow of the craft.

Walney CRT were tasked to the scene but on arrival the vessel had drifted further south toward the marsh at Biggar, The ABP tug Furness Abbey offered assistance but by this time the vessel had drifted out of the channel into shallower water. Walney CRT established an observation point at the Pier Head at Barrow Dock gates where the small craft drifted into deeper water close to the main channel. It was however established that know one was on board, the pilot vessel Syrene left the the docks and towed the vessel to the dock basin where it was secured.

No further coastguard action.

St Bees Inshore Lifeboat paged to assist.

The CRT made their way approx 250m through floodwater to secure the1270247433_Newbiggin.jpg casualties until the arrival of the Lifeboat. Due to the height of the tide the Lifeboat was unable to pass under the viaduct at Eskmeals, and it was estimated that it would be 40 minutes until it could. It was decided, that with the casualties starting to feel the cold, they should be evacuated as soon as possible.

Members of the CRT  fitted the casualties with Lifejackets and escorted them to dry land, where they were wrapped in blankets and taken to a Police vehicle pending the arrival of an  Ambulance. They were treated on scene by the Ambulance crew and taken to a nearby Doctors Surgery to await transport home.
