12 February 00:05 to 01:05 UTC Location: Morecambe Bay SAR Units: Walney SOJob: 2 FLT - Flare report by telephone - Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public walking in Ravenstown near Flookbourgh, he stated that he had seen a red flare go up into the sky and it had hung in the air for some time. The sighting was in Morecambe Bay in line with the Heysham Power Station. Liverpool Coastguard called the S.O. Walney Island who lives in the neighbouring village of Allithwaite only a few minutes away. It was decided that SO would drive to Applebury Hill and observe the area as it has an excellent view of most of the bay. For safety it was decided unless some thing obvious was noted the beach would not be accessed until back up arrived. As nothing untoward was noted, SO accessed view points by road at Cannon Winder, Raven Winder and West Plain to check the area thoroughly. Nothing was seen, however it was noted that when away from light pollution shooting stars were seen quite clearly. After consultation Liverpool Coastguard stood down the incident at 0105 hrs no further action, a call with good intent. |
